The announcement of direct flights between Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur through low-cost airline AirAsia X is good news for Victoria’s tourism industry, which has been experiencing tough times.
“The tourism sector has faced many challenges in recent times due to higher fuel costs and uncertain economic conditions, but the news of more direct flights to Melbourne from Kuala Lumpur is good news for the industry”, says VTIC Chairman Jeremy Johnson.
AirAsia X will fly to Melbourne for the first time in November and introduce additional flights during peak periods with daily services commencing in March 2009.
“Direct flights to Melbourne assists to encourage business and leisure travellers to visit Melbourne. Without the headache of connecting flights in Sydney, they are more likely to stay in Victoria longer which creates a positive flow-on effect for accommodation, entertainment and hospitality industries.
“An increased number of direct flights to Melbourne is also a win for regional tourism with visitors more likely to hire a car and tour Victoria.
“Victoria has a reputation as a driving holiday destination and direct flights assists visitors to take advantage of this well-earned reputation”, says Mr Johnson.
